CLINICAL QUICK REFERENCE GUIDES / PATHWAYS TO HOLISTIC HEALTH
An Introduction to Holistic Health
Holistic care is deeply rooted in ancient healing practices, notably Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Both of these systems have been utilized for millennia.
Traditional Chinese Medicine dates back nearly 5,000 years and is based on the understanding that the human body is a microcosm of interconnected systems. These systems encompass both physical components and subtle energies, such as "qi," representing life force, and "shen," denoting spirit.
Ayurveda, is believed to have originated from a text authored by Sushruta, known as the "father of Surgery," in the 6th century B.C., recognized for innovative surgical procedures and techniques, as well as for the Sushruta-samhita, which served as the primary reference for surgical knowledge in ancient India.
In the modern context, a contemporary understanding of holistic health began to emerge in the 20th century. The shortcomings of a strictly symptom-oriented and disease-focused approach in conventional medicine became apparent, prompting a resurgence of interest in holistic health practices.
The inaugural National Conference on Holistic Health took place in California in 1975, leading to the establishment of organizations such as the American Holistic Health Association (AHHA) and the Holistic Medical Association shortly thereafter.
